EUROPEAN CUP 2nd ROUND
DUNDEE FC V FC COLOGNE
5th September 1962 at Dens Park Stadium, Dundee

Dundee line-up: Slater, Hamilton, Cox, Seith, Ure, Wishart, Smith, Penman, Cousin, Gilzean, Robertson.

Probably one of the most emphatic victories ever by a Scottish side, Dundee beat German champions Cologne, one of the favourites to win the European Cup, by an astonishing scoreline of 8-1, which is probably similiar to either of the Old Firm beating Bayern Munich 8-1 nowadays.

Dundee, champions of Scotland at the time, were drawn against the Germans and would play the first leg at Dens, then the return at the Mungersdorf Stadium.

In the first half, Dundee pummeled their opponents, and by the time the visiting keeper was injured in a horrific clash with Cousin, the score was already 3-0, but the keeper played on and let in a further 2 goals. He was subsituted at half-time and in the second-half, the home side scored a further 3 goals, with the Germans replying once.

In the return, though, Cologne got their revenge for the first leg hammering, but not without being brutal. Early in the game, goalkeeper Bert Slater was deliberately kicked in the head, and had to be replaced by Penman in goal. However, Slater refused to give up and resumed the game on the wing. Penman played pretty good, but let in 4 goals. Then, he had to face a penalty, which Cologne missed, and many have said that if the home side had scored the penalty, then Dundee would have been out. But, the game finished 4-0, and the Dark Blues went through 8-5 on aggregate.

But, the Germans hadn't finished there. Soon before the end of the game, hundreds of frustrated fans poured onto the pitch and began battering the Dundee players. The board of directors were absolutely appalled by the treatment, and the team refused to attend the after-match reception.

In the next round, Dundee were drawn against Portuguese side Sporting Club Lisbon. In the first leg, which was in Lisbon, the Dee won 1-0. At Dens, before a crowd of 31,000 people, Dundee out-played their opponents and won 4-1.

In the quarter-finals, Dundee drew Belgian champs Anderlecht, and the first leg, again away, Dundee shocked the footballing world, (again!) with a 4-1 win. At Dens, with a crowd of 40,000 watching, Dundee beat the Belgians 2-1.

Then, to the semis, and Dundee now were looking good to maybe lift the trophy at Wembley, (the venue for the final). They were drawn against Italian's AC Milan, but, the Dark Blues couldn't pull it off. In the first-half, AC went 1-0 up only to be pulled back to 1-1 through Cousin. But, in the second-half, Dundee could say that they were cheated when a sea of photographers were coincidentaly placed behind the goal that the Dark Blues were attacking, and with them flashing their bulbs every time the visitors attacked, Dundee failed to score. But, defending was poor and AC went on to score 4 more times taking the score to 5-1.

At Dens, however, Dundee put in another wonderful performance and ran out 1-0 winners, although emotions were high and Alan Gilzean ended up getting himself sent-off.

SCOTTISH CUP FINAL
DUNDEE FC V CLYDE FC
20th April, 1910 at Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow

Dundee line-up: Crumley, Neal, MacEwan, Lee, Dainty, Comrie, Bellmay, Langlands, Hunter, MacFarlane, Fraser.

After 2 drawn games, (2-2 & 0-0) Dundee faced Clyde for the third time at Ibrox in their attempt to bag the first silverware for the club since their foundation in 1893.

Dundee, though, fell behind in the 3rd minute due to Chalmers goal for Clyde, who in previous rounds had defeated both Rangers and Celtic, and also Queen's Park, (who were a good side at the time). But, the Dark Blues got back on level terms just before half-time, as Clyde decided to sit back, Bellamy was the scorer.

And, with Dundee's spirits high in the second-half, they took advantage of a bad error by the Clyde defence, and Longair burried the ball into the net with the strike that won the Scottish Cup for Dundee.

The players received what, at the time, was a tremendous bonus on top of their wages, of in-between £10 and £15.

In the 1st round of the competition, Dundee had drawn a small team named Beith, and although we were drawn away from home, the Dark Blues were given ground rights, so the tie would be played at Dens. However, Beith proved to be a bogey, as the Dee just got past them, (1-1, 1-0).

In the 2nd round, Falkirk came out of the hat along-side Dundee, (home) with the game ending in a 3-0 win for the Dark Blues. On to the Quarter-finals, and Motherwell would be the next opponents, but again Dundee eased past, winning 3-1 at Fir Park.

In the semis, Dundee drew Hibs, who were one of the elite teams in Scotland at the time, and it took 3 games before the Edinburgh side were dumped, (0-0, 0-0, 1-0).
