Dundee were formed in 1893 when 2 Dundee clubs, East
End and Our Boys amalgamated. The 1st competitive game was against Rangers, which ended in a 3-3 draw, and it was played at
West Craigie Park.
The club moved to Carolina Port later in that season,
but due to financial difficulties in December 1898, we had to give up their facilities and were facing extinction. But, thanks
to local businessmen and people of the city, the club got back on their feet and continued.
The club then moved into our current home, Dens Park
in 1899. Since then the club has won many honours which include the Scottish Cup on Wednesday, 20th April 1910
(team-sheet: Crumley, Neal, MacEwan, Lee, Dainty, Comrie, Bellamy, Langlands, Hunter, MacFarlane, Fraser), the League Cup on
22nd October 1951 (team: Brown, Follon, Cowan, Gallacher, Cowie, Boyd, Toner, Patillo, Flavell, Steel ,Christie), 1952
(team: R.Henderson, Follon, Frew, Ziesting, Boyd, Cowie, Toner, A.Henderson, Flavell, Steel, Christie) & on 15th
December 1973 (team: Allan, Wilson, Gemmell, Ford, Stewert, Phillip, Duncan, Robinson, Wallace, J.Scott, Lambie), and
the Division One Championship, on Wednesday, 25th April 1962 (team: Liney, Hamilton, Cox, Seith, Ure, Wishart, Smith,
Penman, Cousin, Gilzean, Robertson. Other players: Craig Brown- 6 games, Bobby Waddell- 4 games, Alec Stuart- 2
games and George McCreadie- 2 games) , under management of Bob Shankly, brother of the famous Liverpool manager, Bill
Shankly.
The following season, Dundee reached the semi-final
of the European Cup, thanks to the goal-scoring abilities of Alan Gilzean, but lost closely to Italian's AC Milan, who went
on to win the title. During that Cup, Dundee recorded famous victories against Cologne, Sporting Lisbon and Anderlecht.
Over the last 20 years, there has been great change in ownership, but current owners Peter and Jimmy Marr took over
in 1997. Since then Dundee have been promoted to the S.P.L, finishing 5th in the first season under Jocky Scott(1998/99),
built 2 new stands (see The Stadium). The club then went-on to attract a
lot of very talented foreign stars under Italian manager Ivano Bonetti. Possibly the biggest signing being Claudio Caniggia
in October 2000, who scored on his debut in a 2-0 success at Pittodrie against Aberdeen, a game which also saw goalkeeper
Rab Douglas play his last game for the Dark Blues as he left for pastures new at Celtic. Then, in June 2002, Ivano
and Dario Bonetti were sacked from Dundee, due to the constant poor performances of the highly talented Dundee team.
Just 48 hours after their departure, Dundee
appointed Jim Duffy as manager, who had previously been at Dundee twice, once as a player, and once as a manager. Duffy, though,
promised to keep up the flair football despite also promising to try and gel the team together more, and make them play more
as a team. In his first season, Jim provided the fans with good play and firm consistency, with the players achieving a 14
game un-beaten run after the winter break, and a Scottish Cup final, which was lost 1-0 to Rangers. In season 2003/04, Dundee
fans hope to enjoy another great season, with the Dark Blues' first venture into Europe through the UEFA Cup for 3 decades.
Dundee will hopefully continue to be
one of the greatest Scottish clubs there is.
ADMINISTRATION
24th November 2003, that is the date that sticks in
every mind of a Dundee supporter. Why is this such a significant date? Well, it's the day that Dundee Football Club officially
entered the darkest days of their 110 year history.
The club had plunged into un-contrable debt of around
£22million and the administrators were called-in to try and ease the losses of around £100,000 a week. 25 employees of DFC,
(15 players and 10 staff) lost their jobs in the huge cut-backs which took place at the club.
The supporters refused to let the club die, and the
Dee4Life campaign was then launched prior to the Dundee v Hearts C.I.S Cup Quarter-Final. That game at Dens will probably
stick-out in the minds of the Dens Park faithful aswell, in an emotion filled night at Dens, Dundee triumphed 1-0. The atmosphere
at Dens that night was probably the best that has been experienced in many a year.
The Dee fought through the turmoil which was administration
and emerged from it in July 2004. This club will hopefully never see days as dark as the ones which were experienced during
administration, and go onto become one of the top clubs in Scotland again.
DFC 4ever.
